Monday Madness (Global Edition) -- January 18, 2016

January 18, 2016
Scott Gunn

This week, Tim and Scott come to you live from Accra, Ghana and Stowe, Vermont, proving that the Supreme Executive Committee will go to all the corners of the earth for you, the Lent Madness public. Scott is on a pilgrimage with Episcopal Relief & Development to learn more about their inspiring and transformational work in Ghana. Check out his flickr page for some photos -- or follow him on Twitter or Instagram for more. Meanwhile, Tim is on vacation in Vermont, resting up for the onslaught of All-Lent-All-The-Time. Ah, the burdens of the SEC.

In this video, Tim and Scott urge you to purchase Saintly Scorecards (as low as $1 each!) and giant bracket posters (just $9 each if you buy two or more!). Check all that out, and more, in the Lentorium. Also, if you haven't already liked Lent Madness on Facebook and followed us on Twitter, please do that. And harass ALL your friends until they do the same. Beyond all that, remember that today is the celebration of the birth of Martin Luther King, Jr. He's one of the greats, though he succumbed to Frances Perkins in Lent Madness 2013 after getting past Martin Luther in the first round.

Lastly, if you decide to use Lent Madness as a fundraiser in your congregation, please do consider sending the proceeds to Episcopal Relief & Development. They're far too enlightened to be involved with something as silly as Lent Madness, but we think they're terrific and very worthy of generous gifts to help heal a hurting world.

  1. Do tell! One is in Ghana and the other is in Vermont! The SEC is truly global and it's quite a thrill to correspond with globetrotters (not the capital G ones). On to the next 20+ days.

  2. Scott should be doing well in Ghana. Being in West Africa, I'm sure they can always use the help, but whenever I am asked where people should go to visit in Africa, I always recommend Ghana. As a kid from 5th grade through 8th grade I lived there with my parents and I can attest that it is a beautiful country with wonderful people and rich in natural resources and culture. Enjoy the food and the music, the festivals, and sites including the colonial castles along the beaches. And speaking of the beaches, in the Endless Summer, they gudged that the best waves were in South Africa, but the best beaches were in Ghana. The waves are not big but they are consistant and very surfable and beaches are beautiful. Have a good time while you do God's work.

  3. What's with the Absalom Jones vs Matthias post in Tuesday's email? Obviously we're not voting, it won't let you even if you wanted to do so. Anyway it was a no brainer that Absalom would have won.

  4. I don't understand it either and wondered about that BUT your outcome might not have been mine. St. Matthias Parish was where I served as Deacon for 10+ years but I celebrated Absalom Jones with the UBE for years....well, a few years but he's revered as the first black Episcopal priest...a toss-up for a non-existent contest yet to be explained. INTRIGUE !!!

  5. Hi Aleathia! Good to see you're back in the game. Oh, I knew it would prompt a response from someone if I said that. Any who, I think it was one of those pregame gremlins. You know checking to see if everything is good to go; and then realizing it went. Seems this happened at least one before. Anyway so happy you are all better. Your comments are valued. Conny

  6. Definite strange stuff going on at LM headqaurters with Scott and Tim away. I went to the LM home page after I saw the Absalom/Mathias email and clicked on the "Bracket 2016" tab to verify the matchup was legit. I saw 32 comments there...from 2013! That aside, can't wait for the start of Lent Madness!

  7. I wondered about this mail as well - I think someone (Tim perhaps) is messing with our minds.

  8. We just received our Lent Madness 2016 order today! Everyone is excited to start filling in their brackets. I also wanted to share that our parish had a lot of fun with our Advent Madness very small bracket of four Old Testament Bible Heroes where Ruth won our Golden Star of Advent.

  9. Christ Church in Geneva Ohio has the Saintly Scorecards and a big bracket for our bulletin board! I do have a few questions -how do people vote each day - does each person need to subscribe to the daily emails, or can you just come to the site and vote, can you vote only once per day, or can you cast multiple votes daily? We are excited to take part in our first Lent Madness!
