Very disappointing! Where are Alban and Cuthbert. I paid good money to get them on the… Oops!
How does one vote?
yeah, that’s what I want to know, too. And am I missing St. Gerard? I don’t see him.
While I usually support the match-up of those with the same name, I have to say that when you have two monumental figures such as Martin Luther and MLK, Jr., one should not be forced to oust one in the first round. They are clearly both #1 seeds.
A lot of great basketball coaches would agree with you.
Molly is quite correct!!
I so agree with Molly: “While I usually support the match-up of those with the same name, I have to say that when you have two monumental figures such as Martin Luther and MLK, Jr., one should not be forced to oust one in the first round. They are clearly both #1 seeds.”
That’s a forced-choice that’s kinda nuts.
Otherwise, all is well (all manner of things shall be well) and I’m looking forward to next year’s Lent Madness. I have already voted for the first “play-in” game. When will the others be scheduled.
Harriet Tubman will clearly win . . .I worry that the competition isn’t strong enough for her win to even seem valid
Eliot against Donne – boy is that tough… and hey, none from the South Pacific – but it will be great battle next year. Roll on Lent 2013.
Father Damien is from the South Pacific. Unfortunately, he lost to a politician; a white woman from New York no less.
This was a particularly difficult choice. Damien lived with those in greatest need and gave his life to be one with them. But Frances Perkins also gave herself and broke through – if only a little – the hard and soulless shell that is DC to bring the love of Christ to action. I didn’t get to vote, but after reflecting on the two and the breadth of their impact on the world, I would have gone with Frances – but only just. That’s the good thing about Lent Madness – we’re all winners for getting to know more about these inspirational Christians.
Starting on Feb. 14 and no St. Valentine ?
The only person that I know of who knew how to celebrate St. Valentines Day was Al Capone. That being said, St. Valentine is not on the Ordo, or as far as I know even considered a “Saint.”
What about St. George?
!!!
Elizabeth Ann Seton = Seton Hall, a sometime basketball powerhouse = slam dunk. For the college basketball fan no contest on this match-up.
So sorry I can’t read the bracket! Perhaps my computer is old. My eyes are definitely old.
But, I am not old.
Except for sometimes…
Click on the fuzzy little one and lo, a readable version shall appear unto you.
Thank you, Peg!
Sadly, I seem to be caught in an endless “Internet stopped working” loop.
ok….I’m sure I mentioned that, among all these other secular luminaries, Fred McFeely Rogers should be nominated for the golden halo!! Does anyone remember this?
No Julian?
Madeleine, I was very moved by a documentary about Fred Rogers on PBS last year. I absolutely agree that he was a saint: he proclaimed that each person is special and loved, and changed the lives of those he met (and helped many that he never met). If we can get a movement to add Fred Rogers to Holy Women, Holy Men, count me in as a helper!
I totally concur Mr. Rogers aka the Rev. Fred McFeely Rogers should be in HWHM and in next years bracket! So count me in along with Molly.
If your not happy, or your favorite is missing (or looses) Remember, there is next year!!
You sound like a Cubs fan, Ted.
Cubbies, like Christians, are an Easter people.
Noticed your link to the calendar is broken.

I poked around a bit and found one in the same folder as your bracket:

Rick.
Thanks, Rick. We’ll get this fixed!
This looks like its going to be a great Lenten ever use to check out who some of these people were.
Therese of Lisieux is a terrible choice! Why glorify anorexia?
“Do small things with great love.” ’nuff said.
Again…Julian of Norwich is left out. One day! One day!
Thomas Tallis! This outfit has already won me over.
And Dietrich Boenhoffer? A finalist last year doesn’t make it?
And where is Queen Emma? She practically won!
A few more people have asked “How do I vote?” The easiest way to make sure you never miss a vote is to sign up on the home page to receive e-mail updates. Every time there’s a match-up you’ll get an email that takes you directly to the contest. Each one is open for 24 hours and you simply click on the button next to the saint of your choice. It’s easy! And just because we have a number of new folks this year we have commissioned Maple Anglican to produce a brief “how to vote” video. Look for it in the next couple of days (again, if you sign up for email updates, it will go directly to your inbox. Welcome aboard!
Really? Martin Luther against Martin Luther King Jr? In the first round? Who’s responsible for this?
Looks like great fun, I’d like to do it with my youth class, but I do not see a single match on a Sunday (which is obviously when we meet). Could you extend either Saturday or Monday to allow voting on Sunday? Please reply.
The first shall be last! Why would we want to bring back the strong contenders from last year? I’m all for diversity and surely there are hundreds if not thousands of saints that deserve a day of honor on the Lent Madness calendar. BTW, I second Beth S’s comment. I respect that clergy need Sunday off, but wonder if technology would allow Sunday voting. I want my kids in the Catechesis of the Good Shepherd Level 3 atrium (4th-6th graders) at St. Philip’s Episcopal in Durham, NC to be able to vote on Sundays. For now, they can play at home.
Can you explain the “play in round” on the bracket? This is my first time to play “Lent Madness”
The Holy Fool reports….I can’t read the Bracket….But It doesn’t stop me in March Madness, either. I am waiting for the Future matchups. There have already been some Bracket busters? …..Does “Slippery Rock” have a Patron Saint?
This sounds like fun, but I’m a little fuzzy on the specifics. Does one normally completely fill out the bracket ahead of time, like in March Madness brackets? Or do you wait until each day to pick one, then see if you’re right on the following day? If it’s the former, I don’t know enough about some of the entrants to make a decision; reading about them on the day of their competition is how I learn and decide. But, if it’s the latter, it would seem to take a lot of the fun out of it. Just wondering. Thanks!
U think we know any more than u, Robert. Pick um like March madness, AND then change your bracket……just like the real March madness.. The holy fool.
Gotta agree with Molly and Nancy. What a shame to have Dr. King and Martin Luther agaisnt each other. Obviously Las Vegas has this as U PICK UM. Heresy, Blasphemy, certainly Incredulous.
Just a request- I get the rounds by e-mail. Couldn’t a link to the site be included?
No Thomas Becket???!!?!! Where can I file a grievance?
I just saw that GtheG will face off (if he holds on here) with Florence Li Tim-Oi, so he’s toast anyway. Well, so would Martin be, or so I would think. Moving along…and loving Lent Madness!
Bishop Curry promoting Lent Madness and interviewing Scott? That’s my bishop! http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=V2bAm1XjvyE
Where’s my mug?
I am baffled by the play-in round. A couple names duplicate names on the 32-name roster. Is it some kind of wild-card competition or what?
Jim,
The “Play-in” rounds got the four winners into the main tournament. On the original bracket, the main tournament first round said “Tallis OR Merbecke” etc… Then, when Tallis won, he went into the bracket.
How Does Francis Perkins beat all of these great saints.
I can’t find anywhere to sign up for this. Granted it is almost over for this year, but I only learned about it today. A don’t know anything about filling up brackets (for basketball or saints) but I figure that I could vote and participate that way. I you have any tips or lessons on how to play, it would be appreciated. Anyway, it looks like a way to learn a lot about the saints and have some fun. Thank you.
Yvonne, if you go to the home page and look on the right side you’ll see a box that says “Get Lent Madness by Email!” Enter your address and voila! You’ll receive every post in your inbox. Welcome!
Got it. Thank you.
Please, how should I go about suggesting/nominating a saint for Lent madness 2014? My suggestion is Army Chaplain Emil J. Kapaun, who just received a posthumous Medal of Honor for his heroic actions during the Korean War. A recent article in the Rochester Democrat & Chronicle mentioned that the Roman Catholic Church has already started their canonization process for him, and that he is already credited with two miracles when people prayed to him, so I am not the only one who thinks he is a saint!
